English Version:

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE ORGANISERS OF SYDNEY’S CHINESE NEW YEAR PARADE

The Falun Dafa Association NSW is a legally registered community group, practicing a traditional Chinese qigong which fosters goodness through the principles of Truth, Compassion, Forbearance. We would naturally like to join in celebration with our fellow Chinese community groups for the 2005 Chinese New Year Parade in Sydney.

However, our application to join the Parade has once again been refused by those responsible in the Chinese New Year Festival Subcommittee. This makes it 5 consecutive years that Falun Dafa has been excluded from the parade.

Despite our requests to meet with the Subcommittee, we have been denied the opportunity to confirm exactly why such a decision has been made. However, we have heard that the reasons for excluding Falun Dafa from the parade include the Subcommittee members’ concerns of not getting visas to China if Falun Dafa is allowed to participate. (and also of) Another fear is that of losing the cooperation of a group from China who is scheduled to participate in the parade and who would pull out if Falun Gong were included.

Such interference is typical of the ‘long arm’ of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) extending its reach into Sydney. The CCP not only persecutes Falun Dafa (Falun Gong) practitioners in China, but it also extends the persecution into Australia. We know of many examples of the CCP spreading its propaganda and vilification against Australians who practice Falun Dafa to our local Councils – and now they are trying to dictate who can participate in our Sydney Parade. While the Subcommittee may also be a victim of the CCP’s influence, we believe its decision is of real concern for all Australians as:

a) It is against the democratic principles we hold dear in Australia, such as freedom from vilification and discrimination.

b) The Falun Dafa Association is entitled to be treated the same as other community groups and there is no justification for such exclusion.

c) The Subcommittee should act according to the (principal) principle and spirit of Australian law, safeguarding Australian citizens’ and tax-payers’ basic rights.

d) The threat of losing a visa or trade benefits makes many Australians vulnerable to the pressure of the CCP. It affects Falun Dafa today, but who may it be tomorrow?

We believe the people of Sydney would be very happy to see the Falun Dafa display of colourful cultural costumes, dancers, traditional waist drummers and Falun Dafa exercises in the Chinese New Year Parade. Falun Dafa practitioners have participated in many parades throughout Australia winning awards on numerous occasions for the beautiful display of traditional Chinese culture. We call on the media to investigate this case and expose the real reasons behind Falun Dafa’s exclusion from the Parade.

In order to step out of the dark shadow that currently hangs over the Parade we also call on the Subcommittee to urgently reconsider its decision and to stand up for what they know in their heart is right and just.
